Simplify endian (byte order) detection
The following:
#if __BYTE_ORDER__ == __ORDER_BIG_ENDIAN__
#if __BYTE_ORDER__ == __ORDER_LITTLE_ENDIAN__
are apparently semi-standard nowadays.
